hi, after forced updating windows 10 creators version (1703) last week, noticed programs (applications) removed! there's still 'windows.old' folder trace of programs, cannot be started there (typically main .exe & .dlls missing). although it's 7 days ago, 'go previous version of windows 10' not available in recovery page.  :-( restore points of "old" windows not accessible, me & programs "ransomed"! how can restore "old" windows programs (& config) intact? thanks. tomtrooper hi tom, understand inconvenience you've experienced @ moment. when installing major updates, windows may remove programs compatibility reasons, if programs known cause conflicts. done ensure update installed successfully. getting programs removed after major update rare case. isolate issue, suggest performing system restore restore computer earlier point

i've tried 3 times reset old acer laptop that's running win10. need ship out , don't want of digital footprint left on it. go through steps reset under recovery, , chugs through if doing something, hours later comes message not reset computer , nothing changed. (i did on laptop, , worked fine, don't think i'm missing steps.) are there other approaches resetting can try? hello, the issue either caused hardware or software problems. can hardware issue if device not compatible windows 10. however, since you've mentioned has been installed windows 10, can rule possibility out. since you've done recovery 3 times, can suggest doing clean installation of windows 10. can follow greg carmack's instructions on wiki article in-depth guide on how clean installation on device. let know how if you're able install windows 10. i have upgraded windows 10 without issue. problems started after update has completed. prefetch folder keeps getting corrupted. have used chkdsk fix it, problem keeps returning. windows resource protection didn't find integrity violations good. chkdsk /f /r not able fix corruption. i have ran s.m.a.r.t test power cycle count attribute below 97%. think heard drive on it's way out why chksks can't fix it. advice welcome. how know prefetch folder corrupt? to fix issue, delete contents of prefetch folder . . . note: first few boots may me bit slow until windows rebuilds prefetch file systm Windows / Windows 10 / Windows update, recovery, & backup / PC

(i believe correct topic) want increase how of windows 10 creates "shadow copies" (i not sure if correct term). talking when right click file or folder , has "previous versions" tab. usually, whatever reason, no previous version show on tab program shadow explorer (a program used when still had vista) finds previous versions. searched bit , found called "file history" looks works backup , can enable store "copies" external drive. not want that. don't want backup. "system" found "system protection" (which sound more backup) have 2 options there: 1. adjust disk space usage, understand allows me access version further in past 2. , manually create restore point @ moment. 1. not care go in past, want restore folder 10 hours ago, usage purposes of going further in past seems unnecessary me. 2. more want. manually created restore point, not see or access right clicking file or folde
