Windows Update Troubleshooter Tool - Microsoft Community

several people have had issues windows update, windows 8.1 not able update windows 10 not updating latest insider build. microsoft has troubleshooting tool can find issue , correct it.

while not fix wrong windows update, , might not fix particular issue, place start. also, if in insiders program, sure check release notes. there known issues have caused problems updating in past (anti-virus interfere, sd card interfere, etc..). great place start if having issues, though, , work fast fix issues windows update may have.

1. go microsoft windows update troubleshooter page (https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/instantanswers/512a5183-ffab-40c5-8a68-021e32467565/windows-update-troubleshooter) , download troubleshooter current operating system.

2. run file. single file can run on it’s own , not require installation. select “windows update” , click next.

3. if runs , cannot detect issues, may need run administrator, option when runs. tool run , check several things.

the troubleshooting tool checks several things:

    • default windows update data locations have changed?
    • some security settings missing or have been changed?
    • check missing or corrupt files.
    • service registration missing or corrupt.
    • potential windows update database error detected?

4. tool fix found issues, , can close troubleshooter. can click more detailed report see did fix. there, can go windows  update , try updates again.

if click view detailed information, see checked , fixed.

tried above. troubleshooter found , "fixed" 4 problems:

  • some security settings missing or have been changed
  • service registration missing or corrupt
  • potential windows update database error detected
  • windows update components must repaired

problem when immediately run troubleshooter again, still finds , "fixes" same 4 problems.

the problem trying solve feature update version 1703 not install. repeatedly downloads whole 6+gb, spends hour or doing install, upon rebooting find still have old version message, "some updates not installed." i'm getting tired of keeping machine busy , using significant fraction of download data cap (5 attempts far @ 6+gb each). above "fixes" don't change behavior. can try, or how can stop , stay old version? windows 10 home, , have no control on updates tries install.

i should add i'm doing troubleshooter included windows 10. might downloaded 1 work better? (and if so, why isn't troubleshooter updated along other windows 10 components?)
