Upgrading ASUS CM6870 to Windows 10 Creators Edition 1703 (RT3090 - Microsoft Community

this pain me, hope helps someone.

i made 15 attempts update asus cm6870 windows 10 anniversary edition creators edition (creators update), *always* hung hard around 40 or 42% after first system reboot, 'rolling' animation ground halt. points hardware problem.

i did find bad hardware! disconnected of usb, ripped out of superfluous drivers, did clean reboot, did driver uninstall on nvidia drivers using ddu, , uninstalled every program had funky driver vmware standalone converter , cisco anyconnect vpn. nothing worked.

each reboot reported "0xc1900101 - 0x30018 installation failed in first_boot phase error during sysprep operation"

digging clues files left behind in c:\$windows.~bt\sources\panther, saw last thing before failure bunch of sppnp messages seems sysprep driver loading phase. there bunch of <nul> characters @ end of file. piece of hardware refusing play nice. had painstakingly removed without opening case.

finally, based on various hints on forums, cracked open pc , pulled out pcie wireless card. boom. installed.

the wireless card pcie x1 in pci x16 slot if matters, , asus branded mediatek railink technologies rt3090 wireless card.

(pci\ven_1814&dev_3090&subsys_760111ad&rev_00)

once creators update installed, able reinstall card without incident. go figure.

edit: problem applies system using p8h61 or p8h77 motherboard. according thread, the p8h77-m pro (cm6870) affected, other asus desktops asus cm6730 a p8h61‑m pro rt3090 wireless card.

other commenters report rog cg6480 / tytan cg8480 , cm1855 affected, presumably errant rt3090 card.

i observed problem ascend ascendtech wn7601r-h1 pci card in hp desktops. rt3090 pcie card.

understand fall creators edition update has problem, installer not yet fixed place nice rt3090 wireless card.

one commenter noted moving card pcix16 slot pcix4 slot fixed problem, may interaction between card , northbridge (motherboard chipset) in slots.

hi remaker,

thank posting findings.

i have same asus cm6870.

installing win 10 or win 10 anniversary edition onto machine no problem - until creators edition.  i'd thru 75% of installation , go black screen.

if restarted, revert anniversary edition.

i wasn't using the asus wireless card, removing not issue me.

like yourself, once wireless card removed, installation completed expected.

i have confess never have thought remove wireless card update installed.

thank again.
