MP3 won't play on Windows 2000 Professional - Microsoft Community

i have old compaq computer windows 2000 professional in , media player 8 series , still works fine.  i have many mp3's in there plays fine.  a friend emailed me mp3 on home computer plays fine.  i transferred mp3 thumb drive , burned cd of it.  when inserted thumb drive in compaq computer opened fine, not play on media player.  when inserted cd compaq not play.  maybe mp3 file received friend newer version of mp3's.  can tell me how can mp3 file play in old compaq computer?
