Windows update installation hanging and I don't dare turn if off - Microsoft Community

have used toshibas satellite l445d laptop cleaned , has windows 7 professional sp-1 on it.  went update computer first time , got 50 or 60 updates , ran through should have.  later went , checked more updates , surprise said there 211 more told computer go ahead update ....9 hours later told me installing #143 of 211 ... ok left go work ... came home lunch 5 hours later , said installing #142 of 211.   come on .... don't dare shut thing down i? can pause or stop update , take different approach (smaller bunches of updates) maybe?  i've been servicing , working on computers 20 years , haven't felt caught between rock , hard place.  have suggestion?
