Laptop (Windows 7) wakes up from sleep then unsuccessfully - Microsoft Community

hi,

i have had problem quite while now, has got whole lot worse since recent windows update. not sure whether have one, or possibly two, separate problems.

some time ago noticed laptop , inexplicably started waking sleep while lid down @ entirely random times. (what don't know!) , go sleep. occasionally, try reboot, seemed unable start properly, sit hard disk chundering away @ maximum capacity fan @ maximum , laptop very, hot until held power button down hard shutdown. when pressed power button again notification windows not shut down properly, restart normal.

since recent windows update, laptop wakes every single morning (i don't think @ same time) , unsuccessfully reboots. if don't close down gets hotter , hotter, point worried that fire risk! way prevent shut laptop down. pain because damn thing takes long start , become usable state!

does have idea how can stop from:

(1) waking sleep mode,

(2) restarting after unauthorised wake-up, and

(3) freezing after restart?

i have been servicing computers lot of years.  unfortunate fact of life sleep/hibernate function in windows problem.  there hundreds of contributing factors.  have seen people spend months trying figure out.  bottom line is not important.  best thing use shut down when not going using computer few hours.

the “sleep” or “hibernate” functions that  run by default in windows 7 can prove problematic.  advise clients restrict hibernate/sleep functions usage in absolutely needed circumstances.  commonly problematic , seldom ever fixed.  myriads of causes can spend weeks trying find.  not worth it.

first: if running desktop pc, shut down sleep , hibernate functions.  of no value , cause problems eventually.  but, notebook pcs, computer used in mobile sense, house power not available, need these functions extend battery life.

background:  concept of sleep/hibernate designed extend battery life.  if not running on battery or never do, idea quite useless.  if doing because computer takes long time startup, fix problem.  under normal circumstances if finished using computer , not plan use again @ least several hours, shut down.  leaving running continuously sure way shorten computer’s life

you can change how these functions behave here:

  1. start globe
  2. type power options in text box pops up
  3. desktop computers:
  4. set hibernate/sleep functions never
  5. notebook computers:
  6. again, set hibernate/sleep functions never, except when battery powered.
  7. in power options window, click change power settings
  8. change advanced power settings
  9. set hard disk turn off after 20 minutes of non-use
  10. under sleep, several settings:
  11.  sleep after never
  12.  hybrid after: never
