for reason, computer won't shutdown or reboot. it'll go through entire shutdown process... exit windows, "shutting down", busy icon spins & stops, screen goes black, computer stays on. discovered after shutting down night find still on next morning.
as test, tried safe mode and shutdown/reboot work fine. tested "safe mode networking" in case network issue, , works too.
i've tried disabling every service , startup app using msconfig, didn't help. tried disabling 2 devices disabled in safe mode (my battery backup , "vmware vmci host device") , didn't help.
i've done multiple av scans using avast, kasperski's tdss killer, & malwarebytes. none of them found wrong.
i checked event viewer logs. no errors reported during shutdown.
my system has run fine years. thing "new" bought brand new (not used or refurbished) win10 tablet same day started , used access shared files/folders on win7 desktop.
by time realized having problem, restore points before problem started had been lost (the scourge of having small 120gb ssd c: drive.) backed tried restoring old backup last july ran trouble (windows refused boot) , had put current config back.
i tried repair installation dvd, says version of windows "is new" (???) perform repair.
i've searched google , ms community. plenty of other people similar issues, none of them apply: have service pack 1 installed, nothing has changed in cmos/bios, i've done full check of drives, ran sfc /scannow , if found nothing wrong.
i'm stumped. have ideas?
hardware:
64bit win7 home.
home-built pc. gigabyte z87-ud4h motherboard, watercooled overclocked 4770k cpu.
16gb of ddr3-2133 memory.
all ms updates installed.
avast free av software.
nvidia gtx670.
c: drive: 120gb corsair "force gt".
windows otherwise runs perfectly, though sporadically, have encountered unusual number of "windows explorer" (the desktop gui) crashes. not sure if that's related, mentioned in thread while having similar problem.
help. tia.
i suspect may keep alive in networking. check networking settings
