License issue after hard drive wipe - Microsoft Community

i took computer fixed friend after got malware virus , tells me has wipe whole hard drive causing me lose on including windows 10. reinstalls windows 10 me , thinking able recover ms website. didn't , instead installed version without license went ms site , attempted recover using outlook profile had w10 , recognizes i elected use gmail address instead login , says have no w10 on computer. 

 now hd have had replaced last year , dell sent me 1 had w7 on (as ordered) , able upgrade w10 free. causing issue? need uninstall current version on w10 , reinstall 7? i'm out of warranty dell unable replacement hd, plus don't know if would've been covered. if has advice i'd appreciate it! thank you!

you need install correct type of windows 10 device has licence for. windows 10 home or pro (and possibly single language). save confusing situation use same sign-in details used previously.

i'm guessing if upgraded dell windows 7 probably windows 10 home.

you need windows 10 installation media, available via ms , media creation tool.
