1.  press   + r  on keyboard (at same time)

2.  type winver run box (see below) click ok.

(the box may different depending on windows version , setup, functionality same.)

you see box tells windows version. examples shown below arrow indicates windows version. sufficient windows version number.

to interpret about windows box (see next 2 images below table) for windows 8, 8.1, rt and rt 8.1 first @ big wording @ top @ says version below. pick see in left column of table below , you'll find windows version in right column. can @ line of text below the  symbol in the about windows box.
