windowsupdate registry key is accidently deleted, how to restore it - Microsoft Community

i need install windows .net framework 3.5 program, on windows 8 pro version..so when tried though add features ,it says need update windows..but  the update fails , displays error 0x800f0906 ..i saw somewhere may  be done changing registry value, when  searched registry key saw, that's missing..computer/hkey_local_machine/software/policies/microsoft/windows/windowsupdate/au

this key seached there..and whole key of computer/hkey_local_machine/software/policies/microsoft/windows/windowsupdate 

could not seen there, time accidently may have deleted that..so how can restore second whole key..i did first key restore copying code notepad ,saving .reg format , merged registry..could code second key ,computer/hkey_local_machine/software/policies/microsoft/windows/windowsupdate  ,sothat can restore it..(some settings may changed,i know..but need default key restore)and there other way avoid problem , install net framework 3.5 on windows 8..thanks..

before started working registry, did save or registry or created system restore point? if haven't done these steps, suggest try repair install or in-place upgrade install resolve issue on installed windows 8 without losing anything.

important:

• you must have @ least 8.87 gb + being used of free space on hard drive or partition windows 8 installed on. may need more if have larger installation.
• be sure not want lose before doing repair install safe.

to repair install, follow these steps:

1. sign in administrator account in windows 8.
2. disable or uninstall 3rd party av or security program have installed prevent interfering upgrade windows 8. can reinstall after windows 8 has finished installing.
3. do step below depending on using repair install of windows 8 with.
   • step 4: repair install windows 8 dvd or usb.
   • step 5: repair install windows 8 iso file.
     
4. insert , open dvd or usb, , go step 6.
5. mount iso. open mounted iso this pc if didn't automatically open, , go step 6.
6. double click on setup file run it.
   
7. if prompted uac, click on yes.
8. if prompted, select download , install updates, , click on next.(note: if updates found, installed, , installation restart , continue on step 9.)
9. enter product key matches installed edition of windows, , click on next.
10. check the accept license terms box, , click on accept.
    
11. select keep windows settings, personal files, , apps , click on next.
12. windows 8 check compatibility issues see if you'll need pc ready windows 8. if found, need take care of them before continuing. if no issues found, click on install. windows 8 start install. computer restart few times. take while finish.
13. when windows 8 finished installing, select color like, , click on next.
14. click on use express settings.
15. if have microsoft account, windows 8 start up, signed administrator account.
16. use disk cleanup delete @ least previous windows installation(s), setup log files, temporary windows installation files, , windows upgrade log files items free large amount hard drive space take.
17. check , install available windows updates.

to prevent issue happening in future, recommend registry or create system restore point first before working registry.

to complete registry, type regedit in search bar, right-click on computer, , select export. give file name , set location want saved.

to create system restore point, may refer steps provided on microsoft article.
