Activate Windows problem on an upgraded Windows 10 copy - Microsoft Community

hi. i've been using copy of windows 10 upgraded windows 7 free when still available. today started getting "activate windows" watermark after series of updates(that i've been slacking proceed with) windows on right bottom side of screen. when try troubleshoot, states digital key own windows 10 home edition , version i'm running pro need reinstall windows 10 home or buy key pro version. gives? 

which edition of windows 7 running prior upgrading?

if running windows 7 home basic or home premium, should running windows 10 home.

if running windows 7 professional or ultimate, ignore message, use professional or ultimate key reactivate using chat support:

click start > settings > update & security > activation > change product key enter new product key click next to activate

windows 7 came preinstalled on computer, how find product key?

the product key located on coa sticker attached bottom of laptop or in battery compartment. in rare cases can found in memory compartment. tower systems, @ top or side of system unit. it looks following:

if certificate of authenticity (coa) sticker damaged or letters or not legible, have consider following options:

  • use digital camera capture picture of coa enlarge on computer.
  • if coa sticker damaged, need use recovery partition reinstall windows 7, exempt need use product key activate windows 7 installation.
  • if recovery partition not available or damaged, should contact manufacturer of computer , request recovery disc set can use reinstall windows 7. might charge small shipping , handling fee. exempt need use product key also.
  • if none of above options work or not available, best purchase new windows 10 license:

buy windows 10 home/pro

i bought retail box copy of windows 7 or windows 8 or windows 8.1; find product key?

for windows 7, product key can located on pamphlet in inside windows 7 box.
