the hd on laptop failed , replaced new hd. used recovery cds reinstall operating system , applications. tried run windows updates , when window following message: "check updates computer". when click check updates button following message: windows update cannot check updates because service not running. may need restart computer.

i check service , running. rebooted computer still doesn't work.

i have tried install sp1 didn't work. tried updating internet explorer 8 , doesn't work. keep on getting errors.

have come across issue in past?

here specs on laptop.

make: toshiba

model: satellite e205

oper sys: windows 7 home premium

fyi... tried many suggested options have found on web none of them seem work. next step try mess registry. i'm trying avoid modifying registry.

after installed drive windows updates started worked. able bring computer date.

you may run system file checker , dism tool resolve issues corrupted system files may cause issue. this, follow these steps:

  1. press windows key + x on keyboard.
  2. choose command prompt (admin).
  3. type or copy each command followed hitting enter:
         sfc /scannow
         dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth
