Windows 8.1 Black screen, no safe mode, no start from cd - Microsoft Community

i have windows 8.1 on dell inspiron 9400. automatically updated last time on , has black screen when starts. flash message "mp061 series" (at bottom of screen) , "f2 = setup" , "f12 = boot menu" (at top right of screen) briefly. 

i tried f12 , got boot menu up-down arrows not work, means can't choose except internal hdd. when hit enter while internal hdd highlighted, nothing happens @ all. inserting windows 8.1 cd not work, since can't move cursor choose it. pressing enter or esc (or other key or combination of keys) has no effect, except single beep every time hit key. have hold down power button turn computer off.

when tried f2, shows "preparing enter setup..." , gives me screen full of blue heart icons, no longer amusing. hitting key or combination of keys has no effect, except single beep when keys depressed. exceptions are: up-arrow beep, down-arrow doesn't make sound; , no sound alt, ctrl or shift keys.

hitting/holding f8 gave me message "loading files...: across bottom of screen before going black. holding shift key din't except go black. holding windows icon key produced dell logo (be still heart!) before going black screen. can't figure out how start in safe mode.

there no devices attached laptop @ all, not issue. have done many restarts trying different combinations of keys , inserting windows 8.1 cd without success.

i'm guessing last update downloaded causing trouble. problem can't past black screen it. can't start in safe mode or windows 8.1 cd. if has suggestions, appreciate it. (please note not computer tech, normal english helpful , time saving, not have spend time looking definitions , translations. am, however, @ following directions.) thank you!!
