Clone System Disk Issues - Microsoft Community

i purchased 525 gb ssd replace boot drive, speed computer. , have run number of issues.

i running windows 10 creators update. pc upgraded @ beginning of last week.

my old mechanical drive 1.5tb. , had 4 partitions on it.

• 100mb system reserved

• c: - 700gb plus bit more. reduced size in windows , got down 623gb.  seeing if less 500gb.

• d: - 200 gb

• e: - 500 gb

my c drive full changed location of windows pictures , videos folders on other hard drive. using 317 gb on c: drive.

i used macrium reflect create images of ‘system reserved’ , c: drive.  and restored these images onto ssd. macrium reflect supports resizing partitions able fit 623gb, using 317 gb.

my plan ssd drive working, , later use old mechanical drive d: , e: drive.

 

issue 1:

my cloned windows 10 failing start.  i see windows 10 logo.  but dreaded windows 10 black screen cursor , blue spinning circle.  i not see windows log on screen. , ctrl-alt-delete nothing far can tell.  the first time left pc on hour see if become good, did not.

windows seems think booting fine. because if press power button, takes little while shut down. never starts in recovery mode, unless turn power off twice in row while starting up. windows seems think starting okay.

in recovery mode have tried starting in safe mode. however, same issue. except mouse cursor larger because booting in vga mode. can tell in safe mode. whatever issue is, taking breaking safe mode also.

i tried uninstalling anti virus program listed on web cause issue. , re-imaged , cloning did not help. using avira , been thinking of changing microsoft’s built it.

 

issue 2:

 

i thought see if repair in place windows 10 creators update usb. downloaded from:

https://www.microsoft.com/en-au/software-download/windows10

 

however, if boot usb either old mechanical hard drive or new ssd connected. following message:

"it looks started upgrade , booted installation media. if want continue upgrade, remove media pc , click yes. if want perform clean installation instead, click no."

clicking on yes, tries boot windows 10 again.

if click no or press escape, gets past message , takes “enter languages , other preferences”.

click next , there option ‘install now’ , ‘repair computer’. choosing ‘repair computer’

gives following options:

continue – exit , continue windows 10

use device – use usb drive, network connection, or windows recovery dvd

troubleshoot – system restore points, system image recovery, start-up repair.

command prompt

 

choosing use device , clicking on usb stick makes computer reboot.  and message "it looks started upgrade , booted installation media.” stuck in loop.

searching message , have found other people same issue.

i guessing there flag somewhere in windows saying still doing upgrade. know how reset this?  i wondering if updating win 10 creators update last week.

 

issue 3:

 

i decided try , reset windows 10 keeping files see if fix start-up issue ssd.

so forced pc recovery mode, turning off twice during windows start-up. , choose ‘reset pc’ ‘keep files’

and selected user account , entered password.

and got:

“to reset pc , keep files, users, program files, , windows directories need on same drive. can choose reset pc , remove instead, should personal files first.” , there cancel button. takes main recovery options.

i thought might because moved windows ‘pictures’ , ‘videos’ folders other drive free space. booted in mechanical drive , set ‘pictures’ , ‘videos’ folders c: drive, left them empty. 

imaged c drive , cloned onto ssd again. started on ssd , tried ‘reset pc’ ‘keep files’. , got same issue. cannot attempt ‘reset pc’ ‘keep files’. annoying.

this big issue if cannot boot pc.  as cannot fix issue.  luckily can boot old mechanical drive.

 

back fixing windows booting

so trying work out why getting black windows screen when should getting log on screen.

my new theory there application on d: drive windows wants @ start-up. software developer , put development tools , code on d drive. test have put system reserved , c drive onto old 1 tb hard drive have. c: direct copy , not resized fit. rule out copy sdd c drive being shrunk. 

with test windows has failed start in same way. 

next step add d: drive partition 1tb drive see fixes issue. e: has couple of games installed. hoping not need partition.

this big issue. looks if have second hard drive installed.  as d drive have been different disk drive.  and drive died. windows no longer boot properly. not in safe mode. , cannot reset pc due issue 3.

adding d: drive 1tb partition did not fix issue.  windows still ends black screen after windows logo.

i wondering if it is disk drive letter issue. order of partitions on old hard drives partitions were:

system reserved

e: drive

d: drive

c: drive

on test 1tb harddrive. are:

system reserved

c: drive

d: drive

my boot drive e: drive in recovery console.

are drive letters correct in recovery console? tried changing them diskpart, did not change when next went recovery console.
