Windows 10 update stuck and causing entire system to become unusable - Microsoft Community

i have desktop pc windows 10 1607 on. automatic updates works fine, until 2 nd tuesday's of months updates. updates start downloading not stuck @ various percentages , go no further, , 'but', entire machine system become unusable due 100% disk activity.

i have tried https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/10164/fix-windows-update-errors

however not fix , it's still same.

the way can keep machine in use download latest windows 10 iso , wipe hard disk , fresh install of windows 10. disable or unplug ethernet cable , use wi-fi set metered connection , manually download updates microsoft catalogue , install them.

if plug ethernet cable in , allow automatic updates run on 2nd tuesdays monthly again machine becomes unusable again , have wipe , reinstall new fresh windows again. don't , stick manual method.

so anyway of fixing this??

also have exact same issue on laptop , have tried fix using same process above, did not work. stick manual update method on 1 too.

and wife has exact same issue on laptop , have tried fix using same process above, did not work. sticks manual method of updating too.

strangely enough though, wife’s desktop has never had problem 2nd tuesdays of months updates ever & works fine without issue.

i have found solution issue above.

all 4 pc's above have virtually identical software on them, except wifes desktop, has never suffered automatic update issue, had 3rd party anti-virus software installed since day one.

so myself wondering, if try , install same 3rd party anti-virus software on laptop , re-try automatic updates.

well hey presto. worked. automatic updates go 100% disk activity minute , drops around 30% , downloaded , installed updates in few minutes.

so did same on desktop & laptop , working fine , dandy on automatic updates again. initial 100% disk activity falling around 30% after minute , installed updates quickly.

p.s. no virus or malware found 3rd party software after automatic scans before & after installation.

it's 1 of microsoft recommended ones (from when used have windows 7).
