Backup and Restore fails when volumes are re-ordered or extended - Microsoft Community

i decided upgrade 250gb ssd 500gb 1 due running low on space. i'm using acronis true image 2017 this. i'm using acronis "recovery" drive signature (rather disk cloning directly). normal drive layout on original ssd (and backup image) this:

and once image has been recovered new drive, it's this:

the issue i'm having whenever extend c: use rest of unallocated space, or having unallocated space between c: , 450mb recovery partition - backup , restore fails. error codes different each case.

with unallocated partition moved left of 450mb recovery, , c: extended use unallocated space - backup spits out error: windows backup encountered internal error. please review settings , retry operation. details: incorrect function. error code: 0x81000001.

even unallocated space being left between c: , 450mb recovery not being utilised, fails error: windows backup failed while trying read shadow copy on 1 of volumes being backed up. please check in event logs relevant errors. error code: 0x81000037.

what's more interesting when using "aeomi partition assistant" move unallocated space end of drive - increases recovery partition 454mb. despite - backup succeeds. expected fail due not recognising recovery 450mb partition.

after trawling through google hours on first error code came across couple interesting pages stated backup has sort of 150gb (roughly) file size limit. single file beyond size, , backup , restore fails. suggested perhaps backup seeing additional 227gb of free space "file" , hence error code?

in both cases backup fails right @ end (pretty gets 99%). got ideas? i'd carry on using if possible.

moved from: windows/ windows 10/ devices , drivers

so ran couple more experiments last night. moved unallocated partition between c: , 450mb reserved, time using minitool's app instead of aeomi's, , creating system image worked. (i've no idea why failed last time around, other perhaps using different tool didn't "properly"). gave me hope so...

the next experiment extend partition (i used minitool again) use full space , see happens. rebooted, ran create system image unfortunately failed, following errors:

windows backup encountered error when writing data backup target. (0x80780166)

incorrect function. (0x80070001)

i've got feeling backup isn't working previous backups exist - rather having problem partition being extended. next experiment create system image different/fresh location there no prior backups , see if succeeds. report findings.

Windows / Windows 10 / Windows update, recovery, & backup
