Windows 8.1 reinstalled - Can't update Windows - Microsoft Community

i have re-installed windows 8.1 on hp laptop (from recovery partition) after system killed virus. fresh reformat, re-install.

it did install 2 updates when os reinstalled, nothing more. sytle of display still looking bit old style, , few things display way. example, when using print option says 'greyscale', changed 'use black ink only' after 1 of updates while back.

i cannot windows update, bar keeps going indefinately. computer 2014, there lot of updates needed, windows @ 2014 level udpates, came pre-installed. have run microsoft windows update troubleshooter, comes following:

*service registraton missing or corrupt

*windows update error 0x80070490(2017-02-01-t-11_04_09a)

*problems installing recent updates

but every time run says same. how can fix 'unfixed' straight away afterwards? need ge tthis sorted asap before other things.

i have tried doing update after disabling mcafee software, heard might cause, didn't change anything.

is taking forever because there's years worth of updates find, , don;t show until it's found them all? pc goes sleep mode becuase takes long while it's still searching.

any trying deal appreciated have been trying find way deal this, ther eis stuff contradicting stuff online, can't find anything.

edit: have tried running again, , says there no updates available. (listing udnerneath 'updated: never')  isn't right @ :(
