Backups fail: Volume Shadow Copy errors 22 & 12292 - Microsoft Community

since updating 1 pc windows 10 creators edition, i've been unable backup server 2012 essentials r2.

event viewer has multiple pairs of vss errors 22 , 12292:

volume shadow copy service error: critical component required volume shadow copy service not registered. might happened if error occurred during windows setup or during installation of shadow copy provider. error returned cocreateinstance on class clsid {3e02620c-e180-44f3-b154-2473646e4cb8} , name sw_prov [0x80040154, class not registered
]. 

operation:
   obtain callable interface provider
   add volume shadow copy set

after searching possible answers problem tried running following elevated command prompt:

cd \windows\system32

net stop vss

net stop swprv

regsvr32 ole32.dll

regsvr32 vss_ps.dll

vssvc /register

regsvr32 /i swprv.dll

regsvr32 /i eventcls.dll

regsvr32 es.dll

regsvr32 vssui.dll

regsvr32 msxml.dll

regsvr32 msxml3.dll

regsvr32 msxml4.dll

but returns error follows:

"the module "swprv.dll" loaded call dllregisterserver failed error code 0x80070715."

searching produced following advice:

1. run following command software provider service back. “sc create swprv binpath= “%systemroot%\system32\svchost.exe –k swprv” “sc config swprv displayname= “microsoft software shadow copy provider”

2. export swprv service related registry working machine (windows 2008 r2). import swprv registry problematic server. hkey_local_machine\system\currentcontrolset\services\swprv

 

but assumes knowledge don't have (is command in (1) supposed run command prompt? powershell?. version of windows server in (2) wrong. how export , import?)

this seems common problem coinciding windows updates, no solution doesn't require postgraduate level windows sorcery.

i'd grateful step-by-step instructions on how fix this.

i have been having issue on surface, trying backup essentials server 2012 r2, and not find acceptable resolution until today. came across support case acronis backup , recovery:

it suggested there should 1 entry under vss providers (microsoft software shadow copy provider 1.0) in registry. checked registry on surface , found there 2 providers. 1 of had clsid indicated in error in my event log. related hyper-v, in case.

since had not had luck previous searches issue, decided backup vss registry entry (i.e. right-click 'providers' key, , choose export), , delete the hyper-v provider also listed. support article suggests reboot machine after deleting vss provider keys, however, did not. started backup process , worked.
